When Should Your Motorcycle Be Serviced?

24 September 2026 · 1 min read

Mileage or time? A mechanic’s practical guide to never missing your motorcycle’s service.

The question riders ask most: “When is my service due?” The answer depends on your bike and how you ride it, but some rules apply to every motorcycle.

Mileage or time – whichever comes first

For most 125–250 cc motorcycles and scooters, engine oil should be changed every 3,000–6,000 km. Even if you ride little, oil degrades over time, so have the bike serviced at least once a year.

Hard use brings the service forward

  • Short, stop-start town riding
  • Long idling in summer heat, hilly roads
  • Heavy courier/work use
  • Dusty unmade roads

In these conditions oil and the air filter wear out sooner, so shortening the interval extends engine life.

Signs your service is due

  • Harsher engine noise, notchy gear changes
  • Higher fuel consumption
  • Hard starting when cold
  • Longer brake lever travel, noisy chain

We record your service date in the workshop and remind you when the next one is due.
